About the Author:

Dave Stetson briefly took up carving in 1956 when his grandfather gave him a pocketknife for his tenth birthday. He attempted a relief carving on the top of his elementary school desk, but having to spend every day for two weeks outside the principal's office after school learning the fine art of sanding and refinishing, promptly ended Dave's relief carving career.

Luckily he reignited his passion for woodcarving again in 1984 in the form of caricature. A student of art all his life, Dave is a keen observer of his surroundings. He is able to notice the obscure gesture, the fine detail and the absurd in his fellow man and thus depicts them in his carvings.

A co-creator and founding member of the Caricature Carvers of America, Dave is passionate about his love of caricature and spends countless hours during carving seminars, woodcarving shows and gallery showings expressing his belief that good caricature is an exaggeration of realism. Dave is often heard saying, "Carving is not a realistic carving gone bad!"

Born in 1946 in Pittsburg, California, and moving to Vermont at the tender age of 3 months, Dave spent his formative years in the country on his grandfather's farm. He lived in Vermont until his sixteenth year and then, at the end of his junior year in high school, his father moved the whole family out of the Snow Belt and into the sunshine of Phoenix, Arizona, where Dave raised his three children and worked in the printing industry for 28 years. Most of his spare time, when he wasn't playing coach to his children's many soccer, baseball and football teams, was spent teaching carving seminars and perfecting his art.

Dave presently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, and has been a full-time woodcarving instructor, artist and show judge since 1996. He has won countless awards for his carvings across the country. He is available to teach seminars and has created a number of original design wood roughouts and casted study aids, which are available for sale.
