Book Expo America
May
26, 2004
Chicago: As the ranks of woodworkers in the United States include an increasing
number of women, a leading publisher announces a new book title that encourages
women to try their hand at woodworking. Fox Chapel Publishing, based in
East Petersburg, Pa. will present Woodworking
Projects for Women, as well as promote a special giveaway, at
this year's Book Expo America (BEA), held June 3-6 at McCormick Place
Convention Center in Chicago.
Fox
Chapel, a leading resource for woodworking books and magazines, saw the
need for a book directed toward women interested in woodworking, and developed Woodworking
Projects for Women.
“Women
woodworkers are one of the fastest growing segments of the do-it-yourself
niche, but until now they have had little resources to support their community
and build their skills.” said Alan Giagnocavo, president of Fox Chapel.
“This new book will show that workshops and power tools are not just for
men anymore,” he stated.
Recent
studies have proved just that. In April 2003, tool manufacturer Ryobi
conducted a survey in which 88 percent of the women asked said they would
like to receive a power tool as a gift. Home improvement store Lowe's
did similar research and found that 81 percent of the women polled own,
at a minimum, basic hand tools and a few power tools. The Lowe's survey
also revealed that one in five women said she had an extensive tool collection,
and one in three women said power is the primary attribute she looks for
in a tool.
Fox
Chapel's Woodworking
Projects for Women features
projects for the home, garden and kitchen, among others. The book's author
is Linda Hendry, an accomplished woodworker and the associate editor of Weekend Woodcrafts magazine.
Besides
connecting women to the woodworking world, Fox Chapel will also be linking
a famous writer to the craft. Visitors will be able to view an incredible
woodcarving of author Mark Twain, and those that qualify can enter to
win the carving. The piece was completed by nationally renowned carver
Vic Hood, and has a $5,000 value. The bust will be on display at Fox Chapel's
booth, #1231, at BEA.
Other
books that Fox Chapel will introduce at BEA include:
