Dixie Woodcarving Show
Whimsical Characters and Wood Spirits Demonstrations
When the Heart of Dixie Woodcarving Show opens Saturday, August 27 in Old Alabama Town (at the Loeb Reception Center, 301 Columbus Street), nationally known woodcarver and Millbrook, Alabama author, Carole Jean Boyd, will demonstrate how she creates whimsical characters and wood spirits from Cypress Knees. She is the co-author of a soon-to-be-released book, Carving Cypress Knees, written for the imaginative carver who wants to know how to carve these strange yet wonderful silly-looking growths that are softer than the Cypress tree trunk. Carole Jean is well known for her artistic ability – the eyes of her characters seem to follow you from one side of the room to the other – and she’s willing to show and tell other artists exactly how she does it!
Carole Jean Boyd is the owner of the Old South Woodcarving Studio, one of the show sponsors. Carole Jean has won Best of Show awards at the Blue Earth Show in Minnesota and at the War Eagle Fall Fair in Arkansas. In addition to the numerous first-place awards she has received at woodcarving competitions, she also teaches woodcarving in her Old South Wood Carving Studio in Montgomery, Alabama and at woodcarving clubs throughout the United States.
Carvers from Alabama and surrounding states are expected to compete in the show. Entries will be judged by guest instructor and judge, Dee Gipson, show chair of the Texas Woodcarvers Guild. Dee is known for her realistic animal carvings.
This event promises visually pleasing art – often prompting the question – how did they do that in wood? Some pieces will be available for sale, as well.
