Retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer - Fox Chapel Publishing

Retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer
Featured in Magazine, Author of New Book

East Petersburg, PA.
As a retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer, Neal Moore is one of those who, to quote John Reilly, Ships’ History Branch, “Provide(s) our Navy with a vital and invaluable form of leadership - an officer technical specialist who has expertise and authority to direct the most difficult and exacting technical operations in a given occupational area.” Considered the absolute-best at what they do for the Navy, warrant officers have risen through the ranks of the enlisted, endure a strict selection process, and receive a Presidential appointment.

Retired since 1983, Neal Moore has shifted his interest in “exacting technical operations” to a different venue, but one that has equally captured his interest for the technical challenges it presents and the teaching opportunities it provides.

In 2003, Neal Moore bought a Dewalt scroll saw and soon developed his own patterns, working especially in a wood-crafting technique called “segmented portraiture”. Moore’s original animal portraits, lifelike mosaics crafted in wood, came to the attention of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine, whose editors also recognized his ability to teach others by clearly describing the process and method. Readers of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts receive quality scroll saw woodworking patterns and new projects in each issue and Neal Moore’s “Tiger” was chosen to be featured on the cover of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts’s Fall 2005 edition.

Another of Neal Moore’s projects, the “Brown Trout Scrollsaic” was published in the Spring 2006 edition of Scroll Saw Workshop (available now on newsstands and from www.scrollsawer.com, or by phone 1-800-457-9112.) Neal says, “Trout anglers are gearing up for opening day, but not everyone catches a “wall hanger” – so I decided to work up a fish project you can keep for yourself or give to a fishing buddy. Much like the “one that got away story, “you can make this one as big as you want!” And, if you want to make something other than a Tiger or a Brown Trout, you’ll be pleased to know there are more projects ahead.

In September 2006, Fox Chapel Publishing will release Neal Moore’s first book, Animal Portraits in Wood, Crafting Artistic Mosaics with Your Scroll Saw. The book will illustrate how-to build basic skills for creating dramatic wildlife art with a scroll saw. Full-color photographs show how to apply a pattern to wood, cut-out individual pieces with a scroll saw, reassemble and stain according to Moore’s precise instructions. Each project adds another challenge, but the final results are a mosaic-style animal portrait that conveys both realism and drama.

Neal Moore is a moderator for Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts's message board and is an expert in fretwork and segmented portraiture. Neal creates scroll saw patterns and also works on commission, frequently creating segmented portraits from pictures of family pets. Neal Moore lives in Cottageville, West Virginia.
