Fox Chapel Named a Publishing Standout for Second Consecutive Year
East Petersburg, PA. - Fox Chapel Publishing is proud to announce they have been named a “Fast Growing Independent Publisher” by Publishers Weekly for the second consecutive year.
Located in beautiful East Petersburg and in operation for over 15 years, Fox Chapel Publishing specializes in publishing do-it-yourself woodworking and crafts titles, as well as publishes two quarterly magazines: Woodcarving Illustrated and Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts. Now with over 25 employees the company, founded by Alan Giagnocavo as a one-man operation in his Lancaster County kitchen, works out of a historic 19th century tobacco warehouse, with complete editorial, production and sales and marketing departments.
In the February 26, 2007 issue of Publishers Weekly, Fox Chapel rose to the #5 Small Publisher Standout, up from the #9 position they occupied the year before in 2006. With 25% sales growth between 2004 and 2006, Fox Chapel attributes its boost in sales to several factors over the past year, including the recent acquisition of Cambium Press, which added 15 titles, as well as strategic partnerships with DK and The Boy Scouts of America, which yielded the best-selling Pinewood Derby Speed Secrets and will result in future woodworking titles.
Fox Chapel also co-published two wood-working titles, Woodworking with the Router and Storage and Shelving Solutions, with Reader’s Digest. In a new venture, Fox Chapel launched the imprint, Historic Arts Press, and published its first title outside the core woodworking/crafts area, called The Historical Atlas of Lancaster County. Released late in 2006, the $60 hardcover nearly sold out of most of the 8,000 units in the first 90 days.
Evidence of the company’s continued success, the President of Fox Chapel Publishing, Alan Giagnocavo, has been honored with invitations to share his professional expertise at two publishing conferences held in New York City.
On March 7, Mr. Giagnocavo appeared at the 9th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Publishers (AAP), held in the Kimmel Center at New York University. Alan spoke on the topic of “Turning a Lifestyle Into a Publishing Program,” with 3 other specialty publishers, including Pamela Art with Storey Books and Jim Childs with The Taunton Press.
The meeting opened with a speech from Former Colorado Congresswoman and President of the AAP, Patricia Schroeder, and was attended by over a hundred professionals from smaller and independent publishers. It focused on approaches to making your publishing house more successful, with such tactics as creating brands, finding a profitable niche, booking author-events, and more.
At the end of May, Alan is scheduled to speak at the Javits Center in NYC, on the topic of “Building a Management Team,” for the Publishers Marketing Association, a conference made up of midsize publishers, with over 4500 members. This event will be attended by over 500 publishers from around the world.
