Art of Chainsaw Carving - Fox Chapel Publishing

Pioneer Artist’s Curiosity About
Wood
Shapes Chainsaw Carving

Art of Chainsaw Carving East Petersburg, PA. Mike McVay from Whidbey Island, Washington (winter) and Wasilla, Alaska (summer) is one of 18 chainsaw carving artists profiled in a new book Art of Chainsaw Carving, An Insider’s Look at 18 Artists Working Against the Grain. Mike began whittling at age 8 and by the early 1960’s was selling his line of small animals and decorative artwork. His production carving shop turned into a thriving business, shipping carvings around the world. In 1964, Governor Mark Hatfield of Oregon invited Mike to carve a 110 ft mural for the Oregon building at the World’s Fair in New York. Soon he was traveling the country, educating carvers and planting the seeds of the art form. He organized the first recorded chainsaw carving contest in Puyallup, Washington in 1981.

Art of Chainsaw Carving will be available for sale in October from all major bookstore chains, from online booksellers and in specialty retail stores. Art of Chainsaw Carving tells the story of the development and evolution of chainsaw carving, celebrates the early artists like Mike McVay and profiles contemporary artists. The book includes a directory of major national and international chainsaw carving events – chainsaw carving competitions draw hundreds of artists and thousands of spectators.

For Mike McVay, much of his life’s work stems from his desire to learn. “I’ve always been curious. I love working with wood, and I like the temporal nature of the medium. Unlike bronze, it doesn’t last forever. It’s given me a better perspective on my own mortality and life expectations. Like a good meal, you can’t eat it twice. It was satisfying at the time, maybe you learned a little something, but you have to move on.”

Art of Chainsaw Carving is available at local bookstores and online booksellers for $19.95. Fox Chapel is a leading publisher of woodcarving, wood turning and scroll saw books and magazines.
