In 1984, he and his wife, Barbara, began West Falls Woodcarving, a part-time mail-order woodcarving supplies business run out of their home in Orchard Park, New York. Reviewer: Barb Siddiqui, Woodcentral.comDate: 11/6/2008From miniatures and hanging ornaments to roly-poly toys and elves, this detailed project book shows side and front-on views for hand carving twenty-five different holiday designs. A handsome toy soldier, a Santa ornament with a spiral-cut beard, Mrs. Claus, some reindeer, a sky-diving Santa ornament, and several renditions of Father Christmas, are all clearly photographed in finished form along with patterns and a bit of advise on changing carved details if desired. Mr. Oar offers a brief introduction to tools and materials, plus design ideas and painting and finishing tips, then launches into two projects with several pages of step-by-step photos in how to advance the carving. These two initial projects guide the beginner from bandsawn blank to finished project, and are followed by twenty-three other project ideas with lined patterns and advice on completing them. Holiday projects would be a great way to learn to carve, and Mr. Oar's initial instuctions apply to the projects all through the book to ensure success.
