Greg Keats is a premier custom call maker who works from his 4000 ft. shop in Rockville, MD. He hand crafts more than 1,000 calls a year which demand prices starting near $140 each. His calls were judged First and Second Place at the '97 and '98 International Call Makers Contest and Exhibit. He is considered a pioneer in his use of stabilized musical grade woods and is highly respected among call makers and collectors worldwide.

If you are a wild game hunter with a side interest in woodturning, then this is a must-have book for you. Success in hunting is a matter of stealth, which in turn is a matter of attracting the birds by "calling" them to your location. Although most people buy pre-bored kits and turn the components on pen mandrels, the book shows how to make your own wooden mandrels and how to make fixtures for boring holes in your own blanks.

As an experienced woodturner, I find that the authors cover the making of game calls thoroughly with good instructions on the actual turning process. The book is well illustrated with easy-to-follow instructions.

Considering the details involved and well described in the book, talking about a 'standard' call is something of an oxymoron. The authors' detailed coverage gives all of that is needed in step-by-step manner, well described with pictures and detail illustrations, to take the reader completely through the exacting process of making calls and gives good insight into the variable factors that make this truly an art form rather than a cut-and-dry, follow the plans, craft.

If you turn wood between centers this book has advanced insight that will make your work more resolved.
