Woodcarving the Nativity in the Folk Art Style Step-by-Step Instructions and Patterns for a 15-Piece Manger Scene By Shawn CipaOver the years, the story of the nativity has been depicted by thousands of artists, in ca variety of art forms. But, when one thinks of a nativity, visions of a hand-carved wooden set often come to mind. Now, carvers looking to create a family heirloom of their own will learn to carve a full 15-piece manger scene with award-winning artist, Shawn Cipa.
First, you will learn to carve and paint the 3 central figures: Joseph, Mary and the Holy child through full-color, step-by-step carving demonstrations. Then, you will find front and side-view patterns for an additional 11 figures. Each project features full material lists and painting color schemes to help bring your carving to life. A construction pattern for a simple stable rounds out the scene.
Author: Shawn CipaShawn Cipa's carving repertoire shows his preference for all things whimsical. His latest book, Carving Fantasy and Legend, Figures in Wood is a showcase for Shawn's artistic talent, his imaginative mind and skilled hands. Shawn's first attempt at carving was a bearded "wood spirit" face which he scrawled into a piece of found driftwood. He continues to carve solely with hand tools in the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania.
Shawn Cipa was recognized as "Santa Carver of the Year" after he won Woodcraft's National Santa Carving contest. His work has appeared in Woodcarving Illustrated magazine. He is also the author of Carving Folk Art Figures and Wood Spirits and Green Men. Shawn accepts commissions for his work and can be contacted at www.shawnscarvings.com.
Reviewer: Steven, NWCADate: 8/29/2008I have carved almost every figure from this book as a Christmas present for my mother. I found the instructions concise and easy to follow, particularly when paired with the excellent photo illustrations. The basic figure shapes are defined in detail and easily applied to the remaining figures with little modification. In fact minor alterations have been used to create additional figures such as the little drummer boy. I have an extensive carving library and rank this book as one of my absolute favorites. I strongly reccomend this book for all level of carvers.
