Scroll saw artists who are avid followers of the American Civil War, or who would like to scroll a commemorative piece for a friend who is, will appreciate this new pattern book by Gary Browning.

Mr. Browning includes more than 50 scroll saw patterns ù all of which feature a Civil War theme. Scrollers will find outline and filled portraits for famous leaders, including Generals Lee and Grant, scenes from noteworthy battles like Burnside Bridge and Gettysburg, and patterns for soldiers in battle and out. The author also includes patterns for other wartime insignia and implements.

Each pattern is published at its full size on an 8 1/2 by 11 page. Scrollers can choose to enlarge or reduce the pattern as necessary for their chosen project. Patterns can be scanned or photocopied to keep the book intact or used directly from the book itself.

All of the patterns are printed in an easy-to-follow black silhouette or black outline. Special cutting notes are included as necessary for the more difficult pieces. Several basic patterns are included for beginners to practice their skills. More intermediate patterns can be altered and made simpler by removing inside cuts and deleting lines.

The author also includes an introduction on the basic cutting techniques. He explains what type of blade to use, where and what kind of wood to purchase, and how to frame finished projects.
