This incredible 30"-tall marble tower will delight and astonish your family and friends. Detailed step-by-step instructions and patterns will help you build ramps, chutes, a spiral staircase, and a dumping bucket using just a few standard tools and materials. The finished machine runs for nearly six minutes as oversized marbles clatter and swoop down the tower.

Making a Marble Machine

Cut simple pieces to create complex tracks and then watch marbles run for almost 6 minutes

The machine is built of simple shapes, but it has a number of small moving parts. You will need to work slowly and cut the wood pieces carefully—accuracy is important, especially in the top unit. For most of the straight cuts, I use a table saw with a thin-kerf blade, but it is possible to use a scroll saw or band saw to cut the small or intricate parts. I suggest cutting outside the lines and sanding up to them for a perfect fit. If a part is a simple square or rectangle, its dimensions are listed in the parts list. I have provided measured drawings to position holes and tracks. Full-size patterns are provided for irregularly shaped pieces.
